We live in dynamic times in which boundaries are dissolved and smart solutions are integrated with traditional styles, materials and techniques. It is a time of craftsmanship, nostalgia, tradition and decoration, but also of globalization, technological innovation and shifting aesthetics. Play, humour and idiosyncrasy go hand in hand with a growing concern for the sustainability of our world.
Smart Deco was initially presented in collaboration with the New York Friedman Benda Gallery at Art Basel Miami in December 2006. Each participant had complete freedom to choose forms, materials and aesthetics. All works show a fascination for high tech materials and advanced techniques, for human interaction as well as for re-using the waste we produce. Highlights of this show were Joris Laarman’s revolutionary Bone furniture and Marcel Wanders’ impressive Crochet chair.
Many new products have been added to the Milan edition of Smart Deco and again the designers have been working in full freedom. Smart Deco 2 emphasises not only the blurring boundaries between traditional craftsmanship and innovative concepts and materials but also between design and technology, design and nature, design and biology, real and artificial, waste and high value, rich and poor. The products are smart and decorative; it is Smart Deco.
Smart Deco 2 is powered by: 3D Systems, Integral Light, DuPont Corian Solid Surfaces and Eurocarbon.
